Everything coverOn March 6th at 7PM, Melissa and I will be at the Barnes and Noble in Middletown, RI to sign copies of The Everything Guide To Writing Graphic Novels. We're hoping for a good turnout...the last time I was involved in a function at the Barnes and Noble (about a year ago, pre-blog) I was very gratified by the SRO attendance. Copies of my Grailstone Gambit will be at the store, too...I'll sign 'em if they're brought to me. I do wish Deirdre could join us.

One of the gratifying results about The Everything Guide to Writing Graphic Novels that surprised me was the reaction of my friend, Jim Mooney...the veteran DC and Marvel comics artist, best-known for his long runs on Supergirl and Spider-Man, although he has worked on every major and second tier character at both Marvel and DC.

He was very delighted that so much of his work was featured in such a (as he put it) "High-class volume."

I also put him at the head of the list of various comics creators and artists on the acknowledgement page.

I've known Jim now for over half my life and one of my enduring regrets is that we weren't able to collaborate as much as both of us wanted to.

We did however, co-create the Star Rangers comic series rangers

Jim designed all of the characters, uniforms and props which Dave Dorman used as the guide for the cover of the first issue.

Although Star Rangers didn't come out as we envisioned it (as a "Lonesome Dove in Space") and it only lasted four issues, it was still considered solid enough to serve as the foundation of the almost equally short-lived 1993 TV series, Space Rangers.star_rangers_model_sheetsm

Jim has gone through a bad couple of years, so if featuring his work prominently in the book made him happy, then that alone made the process of writing it more than worthwhile.

Anyway, hope to see you at the signing on March 6th.
